Eight Irish First Place Finishes Highlight Lenny Lyles Invitational Performance

LOUISVILLE – The men’s and women’s track team was back in action on Wednesday, helping open the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center for its inaugural meet in Louisville. The Irish turned in eight first place finishes on the day, four from the women’s side and four from the men’s squad.

Both the women’s and men’s team finished second at the Lenny Lyles Cardinal Invitational. The women totaled 101 points on the day and the men recorded 96 over the course of the meet.

Leading the way on the women’s team was Rachel Tanczos, who won the weight throw with a season-best distance of 22.64m to move into first place in the ACC for the event and third in the country. The first place finish is Tanczos’ seventh career victory in the weight throw. The senior wasn’t done though, as she then won the shot put with a mark of 15.35m, the best distance of the season for Tanczos.

In the mile run, Olivia Markezich shattered her PR with a time of 4:39.81, which ranks sixth in program history for the event. Markezich also now ranks second in the conference in the mile heading into next weekend’s championships and 15th in the country.

For the second time this season freshman Madison Schmidt captured a high jump event title, clearing 1.70m to take first place in the event.

On the men’s side, John Stefan picked up the first weight throw event title in his career, posting a mark of 19.59 to win.

Joseph Dobrydney crossed the finish line first in the 400m dash with a time of 49.78. The win is the first for the sophomore in his career.

The Irish claimed the top two spots in the 800m run, as Parker Jones crossed first with a time of 1:53.08 followed by teammate Thomas Walters in 1:55.84.

Junior Colton Crum capped off the day with his third pole vault win in as many outings this season. Crum cleared 5.03m to win the event and has eight first place finishes in his career for the event.

Championship season begins for the Irish next weekend, as Notre Dame travels to Clemson for the ACC Championship. The three-day event will begin on Thursday, Feb. 25 and will end on Saturday, Feb. 27.
