NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame freshman women’s tennis player Becky Varnum continue her run to the finals of the Blue Flight championship match at the Eck Classic with two wins Saturday. Varnum won 15 out of 15 games at one point in the match in her 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Illinois’ Simone Kung. She followed that win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Northwestern’s Laura Guignon. Varnum will face Marquette’s Elisa Penalvo, ranked 26th in the country, in the finals on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at the Courtney Tennis Center.

In the Blue Flight doubles, Lindsey Green and Sarah Scaringe will face Irish teammates Varnum and Kelly Zalinski in the finals. Zalinski advanced to the finals of the Blue Flight singles with two straight set wins. She will meet Drake’s Cecily Dubusker in the finals.

Greene dropped her singles quarterfinal match to Guignon 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 but rallied to win 6-3, 7-5 over Kung. She will play Illinois’ Stacy Schapiro in her final match on Sunday. Freshman Nina Vaughan won two consolation singles matched and will meet Marquette’s Ana Fernandez. Sophomore Kim Guy lost to Fernandez and will play Marquette’s Laura Garcia. Freshman Berica Day won her first consolation match and dropped her second to set a match with DePaul’s Charlotte Aronsson.
