Dyer Leads Irish At Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Freshman Frank Dyer led an exceptional night of performances by the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team on the first day of the Hawkeye Invitational Friday at Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Dyer blitzed the field with a meet-record time in the 500 freestyle (4:24.04) to secure the victory in the first individual event of the evening session. The time also was recognized as a NCAA B-standard.

Michael Sullivan added to the Notre Dame medal haul in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in a swift readout of 1:50.85 to collect the silver medal in the event. The relay team of Dyer, Joshua Nosal, Kevin Overholt and Christopher Johnson also brought in hardware for the Irish, placing third in the 200 free relay in 1:22.33.

With 259 points, Notre Dame trails only Iowa (379) in the seven-team field.

The Irish will resume action Saturday (Dec. 4) with the 10:00 am (CT) preliminary session. Live results will be available on UND.com.

200 Free Relay: The squad of Dyer, Nosal, Overholt, and Johnson took third in 1:22.33 and finished under the previous meet record … the quartet of John McGinley, Kevin Rahill, Marshall Sherman and Thomas Van Volkenburg finished in 1:24.85, good for seventh place.

500 Freestyle: Dyer cruised to a victory in the event (4:24.04) beating the next swimmer by over one second … the time beat the previous meet and pool record by four seconds … Steven Brus won the B-final with a posting of 4:36.51 … Conor Evans (4:37.42), Wesley Mullins (4:39.67) and Jonathon Whitcomb (4:40.09) also posted strong times in the event.

200 Individual Medley: Sullivan swam a season-best 1:50.85 en route to his second-place swim … Bertie Nel (1:50.97) was close behind and placed fourth … Colin Babcock (1:51.51) also earned points for the Irish by placing sixth.

50 Freestyle: Dyer posted the top time of the evening for the Irish, garnering fifth-place points in 20.96 … Nosal placed eighth in the same final in 21.18 … Overholt swam to a B-final victory in 20.69, a time that would have placed fourth had qualified for the A-final during the morning prelims.

400 Medley Relay: Finishing in 3:24.88 for seventh-place honors was the tandem of Petar Petrovic, Mason Weber, Jordan Berry and Dyer.

3-meter Diving: Nathan Geary (344.55) led a pack of Irish divers in the high-board event … Geary was third overall, followed in order by Eric Lex (331.40), Wesley Villaflor (322.10) and Ryan Koter (292.25).
