Senior Frank Dyer was named ACC Male Swimmer of the Week after posting the best time in each of the eight events he swam last weekend

Dyer, Coumos Sweep ACC Weekly Honors

Nov. 19, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame senior swimmer Frank Dyer and freshman diver Joe Coumos swept Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Male Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.

The Irish duo became the first Notre Dame male swimming and diving athletes to earn ACC weekly awards during the program’s first season as a conference member.

“This is a grand development, and a great celebration for the year that Frank and Joe have both had,” Notre Dame head coach Tim Welsh said. “Frank was 8-for-8 last weekend, Joe has been diving well against elite competition. We are excited about being in the ACC and just love the fact that they are being recognized by a great conference.”

Dyer claimed five individual race victories last weekend in dual meets against Michigan State and No. 23 Wisconsin to lead Notre Dame to two team wins. The two-time All-American swam the fastest Irish time in the 50 freestyle (20.38) this season, and added a gold medal heat in the 100 freestyle (45.87) and the best time in the 100 fly (exhibition swim of 48.97) Friday against Michigan State. Dyer won the 50 freestyle for the second straight day against Wisconsin (20.57), and added top finishes in both the 200 (1:39.25) and 500 (4:31.42) freestyle events.

Dyer also was a member of the 200 medley relay `A’ squad that swept both of its races during the weekend, with the squad swimming a Notre Dame season-best 1:29.14 against Wisconsin.

Coumos added three first-place finishes and a runner-up result to his already stellar freshman campaign. He scored 331.35 points to claim the top spot off the 1-meter board against Michigan State, and swept both events the following day against Wisconsin. Coumos’ 381.52 points in the 3-meter dive against Wisconsin was the top Notre Dame score in the event this season, and the fourth-best performance in the event in program history.

“Both guys are so modest I think they will just take it in stride and want to keep going,” Welsh said. “When you work very hard and your conference notices that you’re doing a great job, that’s a real boost and real encouragement. We will all build on it.”

Notre Dame closes the first half of its 2013-14 schedule when the Irish travel to the Hawkeye Invitation Dec. 6-8 in Iowa City, Iowa.
