Diver Chiang Takes Fifth In 3M At USA Diving Winter National Championships Prelims

Dec. 23, 2011

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following fall exams, Notre Dame junior diver Jenny Chiang didn’t relax like many of her fellow Irish students. She instead went to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the USA Diving Winter National Championships, where she turned in a fifth place effort in the prelims of the 3M springboard.

The Fairport, N.Y., native, who was swimming for Notre Dame diving coach Caiming Xie’s club team Double Dragon Diving, took fifth out of 74 divers in the 3M with a point total of 258.45. She finished only behind divers from Missouri, Auburn, Ohio and Akron.

The finish qualified her for the USA Diving Winter National Championships the following week, where she competed against many of the top divers in the country. Her week ended in the quarterfinals, as several divers cracked the 300 point total.

Chiang also competed in the 1M springboard in the prelims, placing 20th out of 73 divers with a score of 225.30.

The two-time BIG EAST 3M diving champ and the rest of the Irish return to action on Jan. 14, when they travel to Michigan to battle the Wolverines and Northwestern.
