NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Midfielders Dillon Powers and Michael Rose have been named team captains for the 2012 Notre Dame men’s soccer season. Powers, a senior, will be serving as captain for the second straight season, while Rose, a fifth-year senior, is a first-time captain.
Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) started all 18 matches last season and tallied six points on one goal and four assists. He earned all-BIG EAST second-team honors for the second straight season and also was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-American. The central midfielder has played in 56 career matches, including 42 starts, during his Fighting Irish career and has notched five goals and 13 assists.
Rose (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) missed the first 10 matches of the 2011 campaign due to a knee injury. He returned to play in eight games and registered two goals and one assist from his wide midfield position. During his Irish career, Rose has competed in 41 games, including 21 starts, and has tallied four goals and six assists.
“I’m really excited about Dillon and Michael being captains for us this season,” said Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark. “They did a fantastic job leading the team in the spring. They’ve both come in here this summer and worked with their teammates and organized a tremendous summer program. If they carry that into the fall, they could be two of the best captains that we’ve ever had here at Notre Dame.”
Notre Dame opens its 2012 exhibition slate Aug. 12 at Northern Illinois. The Fighting Irish commence regular-season play Aug. 25 with a home showdown against Duke.
