Day One Complete at ITA National Fall Championships

The 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships are underway in Newport Beach, CA. Irish sent two juniors, Richard Ciamarra and Tristan McCormick to compete. Ciamarra is competing in singles and is joined by McCormick for doubles play.

On Wednesday afternoon, after a long delay, Richard Ciamarra took to the court to play Alejandro Ibanez Gallego from Barry University in his first singles match of the championship. In the first set, Ciamarra fell to Ibanez Gallego 7-5. The second set was looking to be the same outcome as the first until Ciamarra tied it up 4-4. Ciamarra’s resilience in the second half of the second is what allowed him to prevail and win the set, 7-5. It was all tied up as they headed into the third in which Ibanez Gallego gave Ciamarra a run for his money, but was ultimately no match for the Irish player as Ciamarra pulled through and won 6-3.

Ciamarra’s victory advances him to the next round of singles against Keegan Smith of UCLA on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET.

On Wednesday evening, Ciamarra played once again but this time with his doubles partner, Tristan McCormick. The Irish played Draper/Hoffman of Cal Bjorn. The Irish fell to Draper/Hoffman in the first set, 6-4. Ciamarra and McCormick came around in the second and secured the set 6-3. The duo fought a lengthy battle in the third set but fell once more to the guys of Cal Bjorn 10-7.

Ciamarra and McCormick get a shot at redemption as they play in doubles consolation on Thursday evening as they take on Chaw/Caffarena of Lipscomb at 7 p.m. ET.
