NOTRE DAME, Ind. – David Lockwood, defensive backs coach at West Virginia last season, has joined the University of Notre Dame football coaching staff as cornerbacks coach.

Lockwood replaces Jerry Rosburg, who resigned earlier this month to accept a position on the NFL Cleveland Browns coaching staff.

Lockwood’s 2000 season in Morgantown under head coach Don Nehlen saw the Mountaineers finish 7-5, thanks to a victory in the Music City Bowl over Mississippi.

The Media, Pa., native came to West Virginia from Wyoming, where he joined the Cowboys as defensive secondary coach in December of ’99 before returning to his alma mater in March 2000. Prior to that, Lockwood served the previous five seasons (1995-99) at Memphis, coaching the secondary the first four years and wide receivers his final season under head coach Rip Scherer.

Among the defensive backs he coached at Memphis were Reginald Howard, who played with the NFL Carolina Panthers in 2000, and cornerback Mike McKenzie, a third-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in ’99.

In 1994, Lockwood coached the James Madison receivers and tight ends, helping the Dukes to the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinals in 1994 before losing in overtime to Marshall. From 1990-93, he coached tight ends and receivers at Delaware. He helped the Blue Hens to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs each of his last three seasons — with Delaware falling in double ovetime to James Madison in ’91, defeating Samford and Louisiana-Monroe in ’92 before losing to eventual champion Marshall, then defeating Montana in ’93 before again falling to Marshall.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at West Virginia in 1989 for the Mountaineers’ Gator Bowl squad.

A four-year letterman and three-year starter in the West Virginia secondary from 1985-88, Lockwood recorded 58 career tackles, seven passes broken up and two interceptions. He was a member of West Virginia’s 1984 Bluebonnet, 1987 Sun and 1988 Fiesta Bowls teams, and earned Mountaineer Club honors.

A three-year starter as a running back and defensive back at Penncrest High School, he earned first-team all-Delco (Delaware County) and all-Central League first-team honors.

Born March 23, 1966, Lockwood received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from West Virginia in 1989. He and his wife Heidi have three children — Autumn, David Jr., and Jeffrey.
