David Brown Named The RBC Financial Group CCHA Player Of The Month For February

March 1, 2006

Farmington Hills, Mich. – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today that junior goaltender David Brown (Stoney Creek, Ont.) of the University of Notre Dame has been named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for February.

Brown continued his hot play in the second half of the season with a 3-3-1 record during February with a 1.70 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage. In the seven games that he played, Brown allowed just 12 goals with seven of them coming on the power play. In the three losses, the Irish scored just four goals and the 5-11, 199-pound goalkeeper was selected as a Perani Cup second star in five of the seven games that he played.

The management consulting major started the month coming off a 1-0 shutout of Ohio State in the final game of January. He would stop 68-of-73 Michigan State shots in a pair of losses to the Spartans, dropping a 3-2 game at home before falling 2-1 in East Lansing on Feb. 3-4.

Brown started the Irish on a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) on the weekend of Feb. 10-11 when he led Notre Dame to a weekend sweep of Ferris State. At the Joyce Center on Feb. 10, Brown stopped 26-of-27 Bulldog shots in a 4-1 Irish win. He followed that with 29 saves in a 3-2 Notre Dame win at Big Rapids, Mich. Brown was named the RBK goaltender of the week for his two wins versus Ferris State.

The following week (Feb. 17-18) at Bowling Green, the 21-year-old netminder saw his string of 23 consecutive games played snapped due to the effects of the flu in Friday’s 7-4 win over the Falcons. He returned to action on Saturday night to make 34 saves in a 1-1 tie with the Falcons.

Brown closed the regular-season schedule at home with a split versus Alaska Fairbanks. The junior stopped 18-of-19 shots in a 4-1 win on Feb. 24 and then stopped 34 shots the following night in a 2-1 loss to the Nanooks. The split was good enough to earn the Irish the final home-ice spot in the playoffs.

A finalist for CCHA rookie of the year honors in 2003-04, Brown has played in 29 games this season with an 9-14-4 record and a 2.50 goals-against average to go with two shutouts and a .914 save percentage.

Brown and his teammates open the best-of-three first round of the 2006 CCHA playoffs on Fri., March 3 against Alaska Fairbanks. Game time is 7:35 p.m. The two teams will meet on Sat., March 4 at 7:05 p.m. and game three, if necessary at the Joyce Center, will be played on Sun., March 5 at 7:05 p.m.

Special mention for the RBC Financial Group CCHA player of the month go to Miami’s Nathan Davis (So., F), Michigan’s Andrew Ebbett (Sr., F), Bowling Green’s Alex Foster (So., F), Michigan State’s Drew Miller (Jr., F), Ferris State’s Greg Rallo (Sr., F) and Western Michigan’s Paul Szczechura (Jr., F).
