July 17, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame rising junior pitcher Dan Slania was named the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week on Monday night. He is the first Irish player to earn such a nod in the prestigious summer league since eventual Cape Cod MVP A.J. Pollock was named player of the week on July 27, 2008.

Slania (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic H.S.) was dominant in a pair of relief outings for the red-hot Cotuit Kettleers. He opened the week against Yarmouth-Dennis and struck out the side in the ninth inning to secure a shutout. Slania then collected back-to-back six out saves as the Kettleers extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings against both Bourne and Brewster and recorded five strikeouts along the way.

Slania is 1-0 on the campaign with a 2.29 earned-run average and a league-leading six saves. He has appeared in 13 games out of the bullpen for Cotuit. Slania has struck out 26, walked only two and surrendered 15 hits in 19.2 innings of work.
