NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has announced that Dan Miller (Mt. Holly, N.J.) has transferred to Notre Dame from the University of Maryland. Miller, a 6-8, 220-pound guard/forward, played three years for the Terrapins and will have one year of eligibility remaining in 2002-03. He will be required to sit out the upcoming 2001-02 campaign.

A former McDonald’s and Parade Magazine All-American at Rancocas Valley, Miller was a key reserve for Maryland last season averaging 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds as he helped the Terrapins reach their first-ever NCAA Final Four in March. He played in all 36 games and earned four starts while scoring in double figures on four occasions, including a season-high 14 points and six assists against Virginia on March 3. During the NCAA tournament, he averaged 5.0 points and 2.4 rebounds.

As a sophomore, he started all 34 games he played while averaging 8.5 points and 2.9 rebounds, and was one of just four Terrapin players to log more than 1,000 minutes of playing time that season. In his freshman season, he also played in 34 contests, registering 4.2 points and 2.1 rebounds.

In three seasons at Maryland, Miller scored 608 points and grabbed 266 rebounds for career averages of 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds. He made 36 starts in the 104 games he played in during his career at the College Park, Md., school.

As a prep standout, he was named the South Jersey Player of the Year as a senior in 1998 and was the top high school guard in the state of New Jersey. In his senior season, he averaged 20.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists while earning consensus All-America honors. Ranked by Bob Gibbons’ service as one of the top 15 prep players in the country, he also was tabbed for All-America accolades by USA Today and Street & Smith’s during his final scholastic season.

Miller finished his prep career as the all-time leading scorer at Rancocas Valley with 1,508 points and set the single-season scoring mark with 609 points. His 18.4 career scoring average also ranks first all-time at the school.

Miller’s older brother, Greg, was a senior on the University of Delaware basketball team this past season and played for Brey for three seasons there. His father Mick played at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., as did his brother Mike.

“Dan is a great fit for the University as both a student and athlete,” Brey says. “He is looking forward to coming to Notre Dame and continuing his education, he knows and understands that an education from this Univeristy will help him in the future.

“Dan is a polished veteran with exceptional skill and talent. With the departures of three key veteran players — David Graves, Ryan Humphrey and Harold Swanagan — after next season, he is going to fill a big void for us. I feel fortunate that we are getting a player like Dan Miller. He has played for a championship-level program at Maryland and is a player who is accustomed to winning. The experiences he had for three years at the school will be invaluable and certainly will help all of our current players as we continue to work toward reaching that same competitive level.”
