Crysti Foote And Jess Mikula Take BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Player Of The Week Honors

Feb. 28, 2005

Providence, R.I. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team got the 2005 season off to a strong start on Sunday afternoon with a 16-10 win at Ohio University. Two key performers for the Irish in that game – Crysti Foote (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) and Jess Mikula (Sr., Chester, Md.) – were honored today by the BIG EAST Conference as the offensive and defensive players of the week for the week ending February 27.

Foote paced the Irish attack from her attack position as she scored a career-high five goals and eight points in the victory. Notre Dame’s top returning scorer from a year ago, Foote staked the Irish to a 3-0 lead with three goals in the first 4:10 of the game. She then set up two other goals to help the Irish to a 7-5 halftime lead. In the second half, Foote scored twice, including the game winner and added another assist for her eight-point game.

Foote also received national recognition for her opening game performance as she received honorable mention from Inside Lacrosse for its player of the week honors.

Mikula turned in a strong performance on the defensive side of the ball as she led the Irish with three caused turnovers and five draw controls while picking up one ground ball in the game. The caused turnovers equaled a career best while the five draw controls were a season high for the senior captain.

For both players, it marked the first time in their careers that they received BIG EAST player of the week honors. Both were selected to the preseason all-BIG EAST team and were second team all-BIG EAST performers in 2004.

Foote and Mikula and the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team return to action on Thursday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m. when the Irish play host to the third-ranked Northwestern Wildcats. The game will be played at Notre Dame’s Loftus Sports Center.
