Covalschi Named ACC Player Of The Week

Jan. 28, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Freshman Eddy Covalschi has been named the ACC Player of the Week after his 6-3, 5(5)-6, 6-4 victory over Ryuji Hirooka led the No. 29 Irish to upset the eighth-ranked Kentucky. The conference office made the announcement earlier today.

“I was extremely happy that we got the huge win over Kentucky,” says Covalschi. “And to be named Player of the Week after my first big road match made the victory that much sweeter.”

Covalschi’s performance at No. 6 was the final singles match to be played in the 4-3 upset victory. Notre Dame’s win came down to his third set, in which Covalschi was down, 4-3. He went on to win the next three games, the set, and the match for the Irish.

“This recognition is a great tribute to the fantastic weekend that Eddy and our entire team had at Kentucky,” explains head coach Ryan Sachire. “Eddy played superb tennis in the pressure moments of his matches and took advantage of his opportunities when we he got them. Eddy is consistently competing at a very high level for us, and we are excited to watch him continue to grow and develop as the year progresses.”

Notre Dame’s next action is a rematch against Kentucky at home, this Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
