Courtney LaVere Named BIG EAST Rookie Of The Week

March 3, 2003

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame freshman forward Courtney LaVere (Ventura, Calif./Buena H.S.) has been selected as the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. It is the first weekly BIG EAST award of LaVere’s career, and it marks the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Irish have won the conference’s top weekly rookie award at least once.

In two BIG EAST victories last week, LaVere averaged 17 points and 4.5 rebounds per game with a .520 field goal percentage (13-25). She collected a team-high 14 points last Wednesday against Pittsburgh, scoring 10 points during a three-minute span in the second half. She then piled up a game-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting in Saturday’s home finale against Seton Hall, logging her team-best fifth 20-point game of the season. LaVere also played a major role in Notre Dame’s comeback victory over the Pirates, sinking the game-tying layup with 7.8 seconds remaining.

Notre Dame (17-9, 9-6 BIG EAST) will wrap up regular-season play Tuesday at 7 p.m. (EST) when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y., for a matchup with the Orangewomen.
