Consistency Key For Irish In Day Three Of Conference Championship Meet

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Solid performances across the board kept the University of Notre Dame men’s squad on top of the pack in the third day of league action at the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.

Notre Dame (531) leads Louisville (421), Pittsburgh (280.5), and West Virginia (265.5) in the overall team standings.

The 400 Medley Relay squad (Andrew MacKay, Sam Pendergast, MacKenzie LeBlanc, John Lytle) secured a third-place finish at 3:17.27 which was an NCAA B-cut time, nearly six seconds faster than the team’s top time of the season.

Five men placed in the top-10 of the 400 Individual Medley, led by Andrew Deters (4th – 3:56.25) and Michael Sullivan (5th – 3:56.25).

LeBlanc was the highest Irish finisher in the 100 Fly, registering a time of 48.90 in the final heat. Patrick Augustyn earned points with a ninth-place finish in 49.63.

Five more individuals were among the top-10 finishers in the 200 Free. Notre Dame took second and third place in the event, with Lytle and Danny Lutkus touching the wall at 1:38.02 and 1:38.86, respectively.

Pendergrast earned fifth-place nods in the 100 Breast (54.61). MacKay was eighth in the 100 Back (50.88) after posting a 50.54 during the morning’s preliminary heat.

The championships’ final day opens Saturday (Feb. 23) at 10 a.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
