June 10, 2015

NOTRE DAME, Ind. —Twenty-eight years after his Hall of Fame father was drafted by the Houston Astros,University of Notre Dame graduate Conor Biggio learned Wednesday that he too had been selected by the organization, as the Houston native was picked in the 34th round (1,009 overall) in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.

Biggio is the first Irish student-athlete to get drafted by the Astros since RHP Brad Lidge went with the 17th pick in the first round of the 1998 draft.

“It was a whirlwhind of so many emotions,” said Biggio upon finding out he had been drafted. “It was a special moment for my family and I. I grew up with the Astros organization, so it is cool to be associated with an organization that is so near and dear to my family.”

Conor’s father, Craig Biggio (22nd pick, 1st Round, 1987 Draft), spent his entire 20-year MLB career with the Astros, and learned in January that he would be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame this July in Cooperstown, New York.

Biggio, who served primarily as a late-inning pinch runner during his career with the Irish, played in 101 career games with 40 starts in the outfield. He had 39 hits, four doubles and 16 RBI, while stealing 18 bases and scoring 33 runs. Known for patience at the plate, Biggio also had 26 walks and eight hit by pitch.

Conor’s brother, Cavan Biggio, is a rising junior on the Irish baseball team and was drafted in the 29th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
