Claire Bula and Erin Kiernicki Named Captains for the 2000-01 Rowing Season

Notre Dame, Ind. – Seniors Claire Bula and Erin Kiernicki have been named captains of the Notre Dame rowing team for the 2000-01 season head coach Martin Stone announced Monday. Bula and Kiernicki will lead the Irish program in its third year of varsity competition.

Bula, from Madison, Wis., served as the coxswain of the first varsity eight boat last season, which just missed qualifying for the grand finals at the Lexus Central Regionals in Oak Ridge, Tenn., by only 1.2 seconds. The first varsity eight also placed fourth at the Midwest Rowing Championships in Madison, Wis.

Bula is in her third season with the Irish and was a nominee for the US Rowing Honor Roll this summer. She is enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters, majoring in American studies.

Kiernicki, from Chicago, Ill., was the coxswain of the second varsity eight boat in 1999-2000. Her boat placed second in the grand finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., last season. The second varsity eight vessel also finished third at the Midwest Rowing Championships in Madison, Wis., and was second in the petite finals and eighth overall at the Lexus Central Regionals.

Kiernicki is also in her third season of competition for the Irish. Her sophomore season, she served as the coxswain of the lightweight eight boat which finished the 1998-99 year ranked 12th in the nation. Kiernicki is enrolled in the College of Business, majoring in marketing and sociology.
