Ciamarra upsets No. 2 seed at ITA Nationals

It was deja vu for Richard Ciamarra during the second round of singles play at the ITA National Fall Championships.

In the first round, Ciamarra dropped the first set 5-7. He then moved on to tie it up as he secured the second set. It all came down to the third, where Ciamarra battled to ultimately clinch the match win.

The exact same thing happened in the second round, expect this time, he defeated the No. 2 seed, Keegan Smith of UCLA. Ciamarra fell to Smith in the first after a tough battle, 5-7. Ciamarra came back fighting in the second and secured the set, 6-3. In the third, Ciamarra persevered once again to grasp the victory over Smith, 6-2.

Ciamarra will advance in singles to play Phillip Henning of Georgia on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

After falling to Draper/Hoffman of Cal Bjorn in doubles, Richard Ciamarra and Tristan McCormick had their eye on redemption as they entered doubles consolation play on Thursday. The redemption attempt was a success as Ciamarra and McCormick defeated Chaw/Caffarena of Lipscomb 7-6(7) 2-6 10-3.

They move on to play Sculley/Stachowiak of Duke on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
