Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has announced that junior guard Chris Markwood (South Portland, Maine) has left the team and will transfer to the University of Maine at the end of the semester.

Markwood played in 24 career games in an Irish uniform. He missed his entire freshman season (2000-01) after undergoing arthoscopic knee surgery in September of 2000. During the 2001-02, he played in 18 of 33 contests and averaged 0.4 points and 0.3 rebounds. This season, he had played in six of Notre Dame’s 10 games.

The former Gatorade Maine Player of the Year graduated from South Portland High School. Markwood averaged 16.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his senior season despite missing the first seven weeks of the 1999-2000 campaign. Named Mr. Basketball for the state of Maine following his senior year, Markwood was a first-team all-state selection as junior after averaging 21.5 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds.

“Chris was part of team that won a BIG EAST championship regular-season title and appeared in the NCAA tournament twice,” Brey says. “We fully support Chris’ decision to leave Notre Dame and transfer to Maine. He always will be part of our basketball family here.”
