Choma Named IWLCA Player of the Week

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Following a record breaking weekend as the Irish rolled through Gainesville and the opening rounds of NCAA Tournament play, Kasey Choma has been named National Co-Offensive Player of the Week by the IWLCA, as announced by the association Tuesday. The senior from Manorville, New York, led the Irish to a pair of wins in the Gainesville side of the bracket, posting a team-high 16 points over the two-game span.

Choma broke her previous best point total in the opening round against Mercer, firing off six goals and four assists for 10 points Friday night. Scoring nearly a third of all Irish points in the contest, Choma had seven points in the first quarter, tallying a point on all but one goal in the first 15 minutes of their NCAA Tournament run. Her 10 point-game was the first double-digit performance by any Irish woman this season and ranks third-most in program history.

In the NCAA Second Round, Choma continued her strong offensive effort, putting up six points on the Gators including four goals and two assists. Her hat trick goal halfway through the fourth quarter gave the team’s leading scorer her 15th three-plus goal performance of the season, in 20 games played. A two-way midfielder, Choma scored the eventual game-winner with 10.1 seconds left to send the Irish to their second NCAA Quarterfinals in the past three seasons as Notre Dame topped sixth-seeded Florida.

The honor is Choma’s first national Player of the Week award of the season and the team’s second (Ahern – April 4).
