Charel Allen Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Feb. 18, 2008

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second time this season, Notre Dame senior guard Charel Allen (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) has earned a place on the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. It’s the sixth time Allen has been selected for the honor during her career, and she joins sophomore guard Ashley Barlow (Dec. 17) as the two Irish players to receive that distinction this year.

In two games last week, Allen averaged 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game with a .609 field goal percentage (14-of-23) as Notre Dame defeated Marquette (99-76 at home) and No. 21/23 Syracuse (79-67 on the road). In the latter game, Allen posted her first double-double of the season (and fourth of her career) with 22 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.

For the season, Allen leads the Irish and ranks 17th in the BIG EAST in scoring (14.2 ppg.), while also ranking eighth in the conference in both steals (2.0 spg.) and free throw percentage (.805). Allen has scored in double figures 21 times in 25 games, including 12 of the past 13 games. What’s more, she ranks 11th on the Notre Dame career scoring list with 1,407 points (23 points out of 10th place) and is just seven steals shy of becoming the first player in school history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals in her career.

The No. 14/16 Irish (20-5, 8-3) return to action Tuesday when they travel to No. 5/4 Rutgers for an 8 p.m. (ET) game against the Scarlet Knights at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. — the contest will be broadcast live to a national cable audience by CSTV (DirecTV Channel 610/DISH Network Channel 152). Following a Sunday game at DePaul (1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET tipoff on ESPNU), Notre Dame returns home on Feb. 27 to face South Florida at 7 p.m. (ET) inside the Joyce Center. Tickets for that matchup, and all Irish women’s basketball home games, may still be purchased by contacting the Notre Dame Athletics Ticket Office (574-631-7356), ordering on-line by clicking here or stopping by the Joyce Center Gate 10 ticket windows on game day.
