Charel Allen Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Jan. 7, 2008

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame senior guard Charel Allen (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. It’s the fifth time Allen has been selected for the honor during her career (first this season), and she also becomes the second Irish player to be tabbed for conference recognition this year, following sophomore guard Ashley Barlow’s appearance on the Dec. 17 BIG EAST Honor Roll.

In two games last week, Allen averaged 17.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game with a .536 field goal percentage (15-of-28) as Notre Dame split matchups at Richmond (84-59 win) and vs. third-ranked Tennessee (87-63 loss). Allen was the team’s leading scorer in both contests, tossing in a game-high 18 points (8-15 FG) and grabbing six rebounds at Richmond, then collecting 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting against UT.

For the season, Allen leads the Irish and ranks 20th in the BIG EAST in scoring (13.8 ppg.), while also ranking third in the conference and 11th in the nation with a 2.50 assist/turnover ratio. Allen also has scored in double figures 11 times in 14 games, including nine of the past 10 games. What’s more, she has moved into 14th place on the Notre Dame career scoring list with 1,246 points.

The No. 14 Irish (12-2) will tip off BIG EAST play Tuesday when they travel to Louisville for a 7 p.m. (ET) game against the Cardinals at Freedom Hall — the contest will be broadcast live to a national cable audience by College Sports Television (CSTV). Following a Sunday game at No. 16 West Virginia (noon ET tipoff on ESPNU), Notre Dame returns home on Jan. 16 to face Villanova at 7 p.m. (ET) inside the Joyce Center. Tickets for that matchup, and all Irish women’s basketball home games, may still be purchased by contacting the Notre Dame Athletics Ticket Office (574-631-7356), ordering on-line by clicking here or stopping by the Joyce Center Gate 10 ticket windows on game day.
