Candreva Named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It was announced on Wednesday morning by the ACC office that Hunter Candreva has been named the Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It is the fourth straight season at least one member of the Irish have claimed the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Candreva is joined by eight other Irish athletes on the ACC All-Academic Team. He is joined by teammates Stephen Ewart, Jared Smith, Amita Berthier, Miriam Grady, Kaylin Hsieh, Dasha Kudriavtseva, Kara Linder, and Amanda Pirkowski. This is Ewart’s second All-ACC Academic honor and Grady’s fourth occasion being named to the squad.

The Katonah, New York native went 32-19 in dual meet competition in the 2022 season. He finished runner up in the 2022 ACC Championship and finished in 8th place, in his first selection to the 2022 NCAA Championship.

Hsieh joins the All-ACC Academic squad after winning the individual title in women’s epee at the 2022 NCAA Championships, becoming the sixth female épéeist in program history to win a national championship in the weapon class. Pirkowski finished in eighth place at the NCAA Championship, and was awarded second-team All-America honors. Kara Linder finished in fifth place of the weapon class to secure second-team honors. Amita Berthier, who was the national runner-up, received first-team All-America honors at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Kudriavtseva finished first in sabre at the 2022 ACC Championships to help the Irish to their team title.

Ewart and Smith both competed at the NCAA Championships. Ewart finished in eighth giving him third team All-American honors. Smith finished in sixth place earning second-team All-American honors.
