ERIE, Pa. Sophomore Courtney Calabrese scored six goals and senior Kerry Callahan added six assists as the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse beat host Gannon 20-10 on Wednesday. Sophomore Lael O’Shaughnessy scored five goals for the third time in as many games this year. The Irish led 12-6 at halftime and scored the first seven goals of the second half to build a 19-6 lead. Notre Dame starts the season 3-0 for the second consecutive year with the win and returns to action on Tues., March 23, in a 3:00 p.m. game at Syracuse.

Notre Dame scored on 20 of 28 shots and outshot Gannon 28-17. The Irish dominated groundballs, collecting 23 to Gannon’s one. Notre Dame controlled 19 of the 22 draws. Callahan finished with three goals and six assists for nine points. Freshmen Alissa Moser, Maureen Henwood, Natalie Loftus and Maureen Whitaker also contributed to the scoring, while freshman Katherine Scarola scored her first career goal.

Stacey Reynolds scored first for Gannon at 28:20 but the Irish scored four straight goals, including a pair by O’Shaughnessy, and never trailed again. After Gannon cut the lead to 5-3, Notre Dame scored straight, including three by Calabrese, to break the game open 10-3 at 7:19 of the first half. Reynolds added three more goals to get Gannon within 12-6 at halftime.

The Irish went on another long scoring streak to open the second half and used a strong defense to hold Gannon scoreless for the first 21:53 of the second half. Notre Dame scored seven consecutive goals to build a 19-6 lead with 9:12 remaining in the game. Gannon then scored four straight goals before the Irish added another tally for the final 20-10 margin. Notre Dame also beat Gannon 20-10 last year at Moose Krause Stadium.
