Bump, Set, Spike: Freshman Marie Roof

Aug. 29, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – This is the fourth of five “Bump, Set, Spike” installments on UND.com to help Notre Dame fans get to know each of the newcomers to the Irish program this season. Freshman Marie Roof was a two-sport standout in high school and gives the Notre Dame volleyball team an extremely versatile option from the outside.

What’s does playing at Notre Dame mean to you?
It’s really exciting to know that I have the ability to play here because there’s such good competition in our sport. It’s really an honor to be able to play at this school.

Did you always want to play at Notre Dame or did you see yourself playing somewhere farther away from your home in Muskegon, Mich.?
I never really knew where I wanted to play growing up. I just looked at schools close to home, but liked Notre Dame because it was still close to home but far enough that I’m not in my backyard. My family lives about two hours away.

What was your favorite about preseason training?
I liked living with the team and being around everyone all the time. It helped living in the same dorm as them. The whole experience helped me adjust to the college game and college life.

What was your least favorite part about preseason training?
My least favorite part was the late night practices, the ones from 7:00-10:00 p.m. I’m usually in bed by 10:00 p.m.

What’s on your iPod right now?
I’ve been listening to a lot of John Mayer and Jack Johnson.

What movie most closely resembles your life?
(while laughing) I am my own movie!

How many boxes of clothes did you pack into your dorm?
Way too many. I think I packed five of those huge plastic bins.

Have you gotten lost on campus?
Yes, I have. I got lost on my way to class on the first day of school. I had to ask a couple people for directions. Luckily, someone pointed me in the right direction though.

What’s the best meal you’ve cooked on your own?
I make some mean pasta with veggies and red sauce. It’s really good.
