ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The ninth-ranked Notre Dame women’s doubles team of senior Brook Buck and junior Kelcy Tefft captured their second consecutive ITA Midwest Regional Championship Monday. With the victory, Buck and Tefft earned a berth into the main draw of the season’s second grand slam, the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Buck (Yukon, OK) and Tefft (Enid, OK), the tournament’s top-seed, took down second-seeded Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 9-7.
Buck and Tefft are the first Irish doubles team to capture the title in consecutive years since Michelle Dasso and Becky Varnum in 1999 and 2000. Wendy Crabtree and Holyn Lord are the other Irish doubles team to win the event (1994).
Buck and Tefft improve to 7-1 on the year and 66-15 for their career. The duo has captured 12 consecutive matches at the event. Buck and Tefft are 16-1 in the tournament over the last three years (they reached the semifinals in 2005).
Freshman #45 and third-seeded Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, CA) was the lone Irish player to reach the semifinals. Ciobanu upended Kerstin Pahl of Western Michigan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, but missed out on reaching the finals for the second straight year after Georgia Rose defeated Ciobanu, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals.
Ciobanu is now 7-2 on the season and 43-7 for her career.
Sophomore Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, KS) and junior Katie Potts (Brookfield, WI) each reached the quarterfinals, but neither was able to advance into the semifinals. Krisik lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to top-seeded and eighth-ranked Rose, while Potts was beaten by Northwestern’s second-seeded and 35th-ranked Samantha Murray, 6-4, 6-4.
Krisik drops to 9-2 on the year and 25-7 for her career, while Potts is 7-1 and 52-15.
