Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame’s leading scorer freshman Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) scored twice in the second half to lead the Irish to their second straight in a 2-0 shutout of Syracuse.

Braun scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season with the two scores as the Irish improved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Notre Dame controlled both the first and second halves. After a scoreless first half in which the Irish outshot the Orangemen 8-5, Braun scored his first goal when took a pass from Alan Lyskawa (Novi, Mich.) and raced down the field. Braun’s eight-yard shot 1:50 into the second half went past Syracuse goalie Kevin Bacher who had come out of the goal area to try to stop the shot attempt.

Braun gave the Irish an insurance goal with four minutes remaining in the contest when he picked up a Syracuse defender’s loose ball at midfield and threaded the midfield and secondary areas of the Orangemen defense and goes 25 yards untouched.

The Irish held Syracuse in check for most of the second half, although the Orangemen got off eight shots. Most of those game midway through the contest. Only one flurry of shots posed any scoring threat. Both goalies played well with Bacher coming up with nine saves for the Orangemen and Gerick Short (Mobile, Ala.) stopping six shots for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame has now won back-to-back games for the first time since opening the season with consecutive victories. The Orangemen drop to 3-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the BIG EAST with the loss.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Irish and the third at Alumni Field.

The Irish continue their four-game homestand on Tuesday evening , September 5 when they host IUPUI in a non-conference test at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field.
