NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Reigning national player of the week Brittany Bock kept cranking with two more goals, leading the 17th-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team to its fifth straight win in Friday night’s 3-0 game with Georgetown at Alumni Field. The visitors had the first shot of the game, in the ninth minute, but the Irish went on to finish with an 18-1 shot edge while extending their 13-year home unbeaten streak versus BIG EAST teams to 75 games (74-0-1).
Notre Dame (8-4-1, 6-0-0 BIG EAST) – which had all nine shots on goal in Friday’s game and three of the four corner kicks – has not lost to any BIG EAST opponent, regardless of site, since the middle of the 2005 season, with that 30-game conference unbeaten streak (29-0-1) ranking eighth in NCAA women’s soccer history. Georgetown, which posted a 2-1 upset last week at Marquette, fell to 9-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Irish have outscored the opposition 17-2 in the current five-game winning streak while allowing only 23 shots (4.6/gm), seven shots on goal (1.4/gm) and six corner kicks (1.2/gm) in that five-game span.
Bock – now riding a career-best four-game goal streak that includes a hat trick on Oct. 5 at Syracuse – opened the scoring midway through the first half with the 13th header goal of her career, following Michele Weissenhofer’s flip-throw from the right side . Bock was stationed near the top of the six-yard box and headed the ball in traffic, with the shot ricocheting into the far-left side of the goal (24:03).
Notre Dame now has won 42 of its past 43 games when scoring first, with the lone loss in that stretch coming in the recent 2-1 game versus Penn State.
Sophomore midfielder Courtney Rosen later scored her first goal of the season early in the second half, ripping a 16-yard leftfooted shot that sailed into the far-right sidenetting (54:38). A short leftside corner kick from Kerri Hanks set that goal in motion and was followed by a series of crisp passes in the upper left corner of the box. The ball cycled through Rosen, Hanks and senior forward Susan Pinnick, who then dropped a pass back to Rosen to set up her dangerous leftfooted shot while giving Pinnick her 12th career assist in three active seasons with the Irish.
The Irish extended their 17-year unbeaten streak when claiming a 2-0 cushion, as Notre Dame now has posted 253 consecutive wins when scoring the first two goals of the game (dating back to 1991).
A classic combination sequence provided the game’s final score, as the Irish shifted their attack from the left to the right side. Senior midfielder Ashley Jones played a pass from the center of the field (her 15th career assist) and freshman forward Erica Iantorno raced into the right side of the box before one-touching a short pass to her left. Bock was in position to convert a low one-timer from 10 yards out, producing her 32nd career goal with the Irish while giving Jones an assist for the fifth straight game (68:31).
Dating back to 1995, the Irish have lost only once when scoring three-plus goals (a 4-3 loss at Georgetown, in 2002). Notre Dame is 151-1-0 when scoring three-plus goals in that 12-year span, including an active streak of 72 straight wins when scoring three or more goals.
NOTES – Bock and fellow junior forward Hanks now share the team lead with eight goals this season … Hanks extended her team-best assist total to eight for the season and 45 in her career (to go along with 58 goals) … Bock has a team-best 10 gamewinning goals over the course of the past two seasons (4 GWGs in ’07) … Hanks is the sixth player in ND history with 45G-45A in her career, joining the elite company of Jenny Streiffer (70G-71A), Cindy Daws (61G-67A), Anne Makinen (65G-56A), Katie Thorlakson (55G-73A) and Meotis Erikson (59G-46A) … Hanks remains ninth on the ND career points list (161, three back of Erikson) and ninth in career assist (45; one shy of Erikson) … Bock still is 18th on the ND career goals list (32), two behind Amy VanLaecke and current senior Amanda Cinalli … Bock’s 81 career points remain 22nd in ND history, two back of Jen Grubb … Rosen’s goal was the first since her memorable blast that opened the scoring in the 2006 NCAA semifinal win over Florida State (2-1), a similar long range strike with her left foot (the goal vs. FSU came from the upper right corner of the box) … Jones has yet to miss a game in her ND career (92) and now is tied with former teammate Candace Chapman for 21st place on the ND career games played list … Cinalli did not play for just the second time in her career (90 GP) while sophomore center back Haley Ford remained sidelined for the ninth straight games (both due to hamstring injuries).
