Block Out Cancer Set For Sunday Against No. 19 Florida State

Oct. 17, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame volleyball team’s annual Block Out Cancer match is this Sunday against No. 19 Florida State and it needs your help to raise $11,000 that will go directly to benefit Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center – Women’s Task Force and its Secret Sisters Society Fund.

Last year the Irish raised $10,054 after totaling $8,613 in 2011, leading the nation in 2008 ($6,655) and again in 2010 ($10,300).

This year’s fundraisers include pink t-shirts for $10 and pink team jerseys available for auction on UND.com. All cancer survivors will be honored at halftime.

Head coach Debbie Brown is pledging $5 for every block the Irish record in the match. Fans that would like to match Coach Brown’s donation can call 574-631-7356.

“We are really excited about this year because it’s the first time we have done our own thing with Block Out Cancer,” said Brown. “The reason we did this was so all the money raised could go to the local Women’s Task Force and its Secret Sisters Society Fund. It means even a little bit more to us now since it will directly impact the local community. It’s always been a great event and we’ve had terrific support from the community so we are looking forward to being able to participate once again.”

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to “Pink Out Purcell Pavilion” and arrive early to cheer on the Irish as they warm up for their 1 p.m. (ET) match against the Seminoles.

Notre Dame (7-10, 1-5 ACC) kicks off the weekend’s festivities with a 7 p.m. Friday match against Miami (13-4, 6-1 ACC).
