May 6, 2002
The 2002 BIG EAST Championship field was finally settled on Monday afternoon when the Syracuse Orangewomen swept Pittsburgh to claim third place in the regular-season standings. The University of Notre Dame earned the number-one seed in the tournament by virtue of their regular season title and 18-2 league record.
Second-seeded Villanova finished 14-6 in league play, followed in the standings by Syracuse (12-6) and Virginia Tech (12-8). With the Hokie and Orangewomen tied in the standings according to points (two points for a conference win, one point for a tie), Syracuse earned the tie breaker after sweeping Virginia Tech earlier this season.
The BIG EAST champion earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Championship. The championship is being held in Salem, Va., this season at the James I. Moyer Complex. The city of Salem has hosted the last two NCAA Division II National Championships. Admission for the 2002 BIG EAST Championship is $5 for adults and 3$ for senior citizens and children.
