BIG EAST Honors Alugbue After Weekend MVP Performance

Sept. 3, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame sophomore Toni Alugbue has earned a spot on the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll after earning MVP honors at the Shamrock Invitational this weekend, the league office announced on Monday.

The Del Aire, Calif., product turned in a sensational weekend in helping the Irish to a perfect 3-0 mark and a tournament title. Alugbue tallied 49 kills in 103 chances with only 11 errors (.369 attack %). She also added 19 digs and four blocks.

Her big performance came in a 3-1 win over Buffalo on Saturday night as she pounded out 21 kills in 30 opportunities with no errors. Her .700 attack percentage put her in elite company in Irish history, as Alugbue became only the second player to hit over .700 in a four-set match with a minimum of four attacks a set average, joining Mary Kay Walter in 1986.

Alugbue opened up the tourney with an 11-kill, 10-dig performance in a 3-1 come-from-behind win over UAB and closed with a 17-kill showing in a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Kentucky.

She has produced 10 or more kills in all six contests so far this year.

Alugbue and the rest of her Irish teammates hit the road again next weekend for another elite tournament as they travel to Los Angeles for the USC Classic Tournament. They get started on Friday against Cal Poly at 7:30 p.m. ET before playing No. 20 San Diego (3 p.m. ET) and No. 5 USC (10 p.m. ET) on Saturday. All matches can be followed via live stats and may be available via a free live audio stream from USC. More information will be available later in the week on UND.com.
