Basketball Teams Open Season With Irish Madness

Oct. 13, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to begin the madness with a showcase event on Friday, Oct. 21, at 8:00 p.m. (ET), with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center. The free event is being dubbed “Irish Madness.”

This primetime, star-studded event will feature ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale as the night’s emcee and DJ Squeeze of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky providing the tunes. Additionally, head coaches Mike Brey and Muffet McGraw will be on hand coaching their respective teams and former Notre Dame greats Luke Harangody, Matt Carroll, Ruth Riley and Niele Ivey along with a host of other past players will take part in the night’s festivities.

In addition to team scrimmages, there will also be fan contests throughout the night: a men’s and women’s three-point competition, skills challenge, dunk contest and a dance-off between alumni and student-athletes.

The men’s basketball team will tip-off its season with an exhibition against St. Xavier on Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Purcell Pavilion while the women’s team begins its preseason slate one night later against Windsor at 7:00 p.m. at home.
