Baseball To Play Host To 2002 NCAA Regional

Notre Dame, Ind. – For the third time in the last four years, the University of Notre Dame will play host to one of 16 NCAA baseball regionals at Frank Eck Stadium from Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2.

The South Bend Regional will feature two regular season conference champions and three tournament champion teams.

The University of South Alabama Jaguars (41-17), the South Bend regional’s top-seeded team, won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title and finished second in their conference tournament.

Notre Dame (44-15) is the second-seeded team in the regional after winning the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championship.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (36-18-1) are the third-seed team after winning the Big 10 tournament championship.

Kent State (37-20) rounds out the four-team regional and is the fourth seed. The Golden Flashes were second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season and went on to win the conference tournament.

The double-elimination regional opens on Friday, May 31 with game one featuring Notre Dame versus Ohio State in the opening contest at 3:00 p.m. Game two of the regional will see South Alabama face Kent State in the 7:00 p.m. game.

On Saturday, June 1, the third game of the regional will be played at 11:00 a.m. with the losers of games one and two playing an elimination game. Game four will be played at 3:00 p.m. with the winners of game one and two playing. The third game on Saturday, game five of the regional, will be played at 7:00 p.m. with the winner of game three facing the loser of game four in another elimination game. The regional will be decided on Sunday, June 2 with the winner of game four facing the winner of game five at 1:00 p.m. Should a seventh game be necessary, the final game will begin 45 minutes following the end of game six.

The winner of the South Bend Regional will advance to the super regional round versus the winner of the regional being played at Tallahassee, Fla., and hosted by Florida State University. The super regional features a best-of-three series June 7-9.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets for the South Bend Regional can be at the Notre Dame Joyce Center Ticket Office or by calling (574) 631-7356 for credit card orders.

Tickets can be purchased on a single-game basis or as an entire regional package as a new ticket will be needed for every game (including a potential second title game on Sunday).

Individual game tickets for all games are $8.00 for reserved seats, $6.00 for general admission and $4.00 for college students with valid I.D. and youth high school age and under.

All-session reserved tickets are $32.00 with all-session general admission seats costing $24.00. All-session student tickets are $16.00. All persons, regardless of age, are required to have a ticket for an NCAA event. Reserved seating consists of the permanent bleachers behind home plate at Frank Eck Stadium. General admission seating is located in the bleachers just beyond first and third base.
