Barens Leads Field After 18

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ââ’¬” Notre Dame men’s golf stands in fifth place after turning in a 285 (+5) in Sunday’s opening round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at the Warren Golf Course. The course is playing as a 6,713-yard par-70 for the three round event.

Eastern Michigan is the first round leader with an even-par tally of 280, followed by a tie between UTEP and Illinois State at 282 (+2). The second 18 holes of the 54-hole event tees off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Player of the Day

Blake Barens paced the 87-golfer field on Sunday with his first-round 66. Barens’ round included five birdies and just a single bogey. He also finished strongly with birdies on both 16 and 17 before a par on 18. Barens leads the field by a single stroke over Eastern Michigan’s Joey Kremer who carded a 67.

Leigh Torbin, athletics communications associate director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2013 and coordinates all media efforts for Notre Dame’s women’s basketball and men’s golf teams. A native of Framingham, Massachusetts, Torbin graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. He has previously worked full-time on the athletic communications staffs at Vanderbilt, Florida, Connecticut and UCF.
