Baltimore and PSINet Stadium Playing Host To 2002 Notre Dame-Navy Game

Oct. 10, 2001

Annapolis, Md. – Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced Wednesday that PSINet Stadium will play host to the 2002 Navy-Notre Dame game and Giants Stadium will play host to the 2004 Navy-Notre Dame contest. The Navy-Notre Dame game is the longest, continuous intersectional football rivalry in the country. The two teams will square off for the 75th-consecutive time, Nov. 17 in South Bend.

“I am pleased that we will be playing the next two Navy-Notre Dame games at two of the finest football facilities in the country,” said Gladchuk. “We are happy to be able to play Notre Dame in stadiums that are in close proximity to Annapolis, which will allow more of our loyal fans to attend the game.”

“I am excited about playing Notre Dame at PSINet and Giants Stadium,” said Navy head football coach Charlie Weatherbie. “The Ravens and the city of Baltimore put on a great show last year for Army-Navy and the Meadowlands has always been a great place to play a college football game. It will be a great experience for our players to play in these two great stadiums.” The Navy-Notre Dame series will be played for the first time at PSINet Stadium. Navy’s only other appearance at the home of the Baltimore Ravens was last December when the Mids defeated Army, 30-28.

“We had a great experience hosting the Army-Navy game last season. It was a very special event,” said Art Modell, owner and CEO of the Baltimore Ravens. “Hosting a game between two schools with the great traditions and fan following that Navy and Notre Dame have will make this game a larger experience than a regular Saturday afternoon college football game. We are excited to be hosting this game.”

Notre Dame’s trip to the Meadowlands in 2004 will mark the sixth time that game has been played at Giants Stadium and the first time since 1992. The Mids played one of their more memorable games against Notre Dame at Giants Stadium in 1984 when the Irish rallied in the final seconds to defeat Navy, 18-17. Navy last played at Giants Stadium in 1997 when the Mids whipped Army, 39-7.

“The return of one of college football’s most storied rivalries to the New Jersey Meadowlands is a great gift to the fans of the metropolitan area,” said James E. DiEleuterio, Jr., the President of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition. “The Naval Academy and Notre Dame have played a key role in the rich history of Giants Stadium and we look forward to welcoming them back.”
