April 6, 2004

Box Score

Notre Dame, Ind. – Senior Meredith Simon (Flemington, N.J.) scored three goals while Meghan Murphy (Fr., Centennial, Colo.), Lauren Fischer (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Abby Owen (Sr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) scored two goals each as Notre Dame rolled to a 13-8 win over Ohio University on Tuesday afternoon at Moose Krause Stadium. Simons three goals give her a career-high 30 on the season.

The win ran the third-ranked Irish record to 9-0 on the year and extended their school-record winning streak to 13 games. The nine wins give Notre Dame one more than they had all last season when the Irish were 8-7 on the year. They still have seven more regular season games on the 2004 docket. The loss dropped Ohio to 5-4 on the year.

Freshman Dana Dobbie had four goals and an assist for the Bobcats while Lynz Keys scored twice to lead the Bobcat attack.

For the game, Fischer and Owen each had two goals and an assist for three-point games and Crysti Foote (So., Suffern, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist to join Murphy with two points on the afternoon. Kassen Delano (Alexandria, Va.), Jackie Bowers (Jr., Springfield, Pa.) and Kerry Van Shura (So., Bel Air, Md.) had single goals for the Irish.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Fischer and Murphy less than seven minutes into the game. Ohio came back to even the score at two on goals by Melissa Menna off a Dobbie assists and then Dobbie got her first of the day just over 10 minutes into the game (19:55).

Delano and Fischer made it 5-2 with 14:27 left in the first half before Dobbie answered with her second of the game with 13:52 left in the first to make it 4-3. That would be as close as the Bobcats would get in the game, as the Irish would score the next three goals.

Simon got her first of the game on a free-position goal with 9:10 left in the half. Foote would make it 6-3 at with 8:04 left and Owen would score on a free-position shot with 2:27 left in the opening stanza to make it 7-3. Dobbie closed the scoring with her third of the game off a Becky Oxman feed with 1:39 left to send the game to the intermission with Notre Dame on top, 7-4.

The Irish opened the second half with a rush as midfield defender Andrea Kinnik (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) raced the length of the field only to lose control in front of the Ohio goal. The ball bounced off Bowers stick past Bobcat goalkeeper Jennifer Cassidy two minutes into the second half for an 8-4 Irish lead.

Caitlin Link cut the lead to 8-5 just nine seconds later, but Notre Dame would build a comfortable lead by scoring the next four goals. Owen notched what would become the game winner just 5:20 into the second half. Murphy scored her second goal just over 10 minutes into the half for a 10-5 lead. Van Shura made it 11-5 with her first collegiate goal off a great Owen feed from behind the net with 14:49 left and Simon made it 12-5 with 12:39 remaining off a Foote set-up.

Ohio would score three of the final four goals of the game. Dobbie got her fourth with 11:14 remaining and Keys scored her first of two with 10:47 left on the clock. Simon closed out her hat trick with an unassisted goal with 6:43 left and Keys closed out the Ohio scoring with 4:57 left for the 13-8 final score.

Notre Dame outshot Ohio by a 34-24 margin. Cassidy had 13 saves for the Bobcats while Carol Dixon (Jr., Pennsauken, N.J.) had 10 stops for the Irish.

Notre Dame will put its 9-0 record on the line this Saturday, April 10th when the Irish travel to Columbus, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. game versus the Ohio State Buckeyes.
