April 9, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off a perfect week in singles and doubles that helped the No. 32 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team to a 3-0 record, Irish standout Greg Andrews has earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season and the seventh time in two years, the league office announced Tuesday.

Andrews was a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles last weekend as the Irish knocked off SMU (6-1) Friday, before taking down USF (6-1) and Butler (7-0) Saturday.

The junior earned singles wins over No. 124 Arturs Kazijevs of SMU, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5), Oliver Pramming of USF, 6-4, 6-2, and Pulok Bhattacharya of Butler, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles he knocked off Pablo Perez-Esnaola and Nate Lammons of SMU, 8-6, and Guillermo De Vilchez and Everth Dzib of USF, 8-3, while teaming with Matt Dooley at No. 3, and bested Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon of Butler, 8-2, while pairing with Alex Lawson at No. 1.

The Richland, Mich., native is ranked No. 89 in this week’s ITA singles rankings, up 20 spots from No. 109 two weeks ago.

Andrews and the Irish close out the regular season at 2 p.m. Saturday as they travel to archrival Louisville (No. 47) for a huge BIG EAST showdown that will go a long way in determining the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament that is scheduled for April 18-21 at Courtney Tennis Pavilion.
