Andrews and Armstrong Named To Capital One Academic All-America Division I At-Large Teams

June 6, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame standouts Greg Andrews (men’s tennis) and Ashley Armstrong (women’s golf) have been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I At-Large teams. Andrews and Armstrong, both first time Academic All-America® honorees, were selected to the first and third teams, respectively, it was announced today (Thursday, June 6) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Sports in the at-large program consist of women’s bowling, men’s and women’s fencing, women’s field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rifle, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo and men’s wrestling.

With the addition of Andrews and Armstrong, six Notre Dame student-athletes have earned academic All-America honors during the 2012-13 school year, while 229 have received recognition since 1952.

Andrews, who recently completed his junior year and sports a 3.867 in accounting from the Mendoza College of Business, has been a model student-athlete for head coach Bobby Bayliss throughout his career in the program. The Richland, Mich., native has appeared on the Dean’s List all six semesters he has been at Notre Dame and has been named a BIG EAST Academic All-Star twice with the 2012-13 list still yet to be released.

On the court, Andrews is a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year (2012 and 2013) honoree as he helped lead the Irish to this year’s BIG EAST men’s tennis crown after going 18-7 at the No. 1 singles spot during the spring season and 26-13 overall for the year. Named the Most Outstanding Player at this year’s BIG EAST Championship, Andrews and his Irish teammates have advanced to the NCAA Championship in each of his three seasons. Andrews recently advanced to the round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championship, his best showing in his two years competing at the event.

Andrews is the first Notre Dame men’s tennis player to earn first team Capital One Academic All-America honors in program history and only the third overall, joining Andy Zurcher (3rd-1994) and Tyler Davis (2nd-2011).

Armstrong, a native of Flossmoor, Ill., was the 2012 BIG EAST Championship medalist. During the past season, she added to her medal count total as she won back-to-back individual tournament titles with victories during the month of March at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate and the Briar’s Creek Invitational.

The Flossmoor, Ill., native was recognized earlier this season as Golfweek’s Women’s National Player of the Week (March 25-31) and the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Player of the Week (March 17-23). Furthermore, Armstrong was selected to the all-BIG EAST Women’s Golf Team for the second straight season after finishing fifth at the conference tournament with a three-over-par 219 (77-72-70).

Armstrong’s two under-par rounds at the BIG EAST Championship proved to be a key factor in securing Notre Dame’s team title and automatic bid into the ’13 NCAA East Regional, continuing its tradition of making an appearance in the tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The 54-hole total stands as the best team score ever in BIG EAST tournament history and the program’s second-best score since its inception in 1988.

Sophomore Ashley Armstrong earned third team Capital One Academic All-America® honors for the Division I At-Large category Thursday.

Armstrong served as a major contributor to Notre Dame’s success this year, tallying three top-10 finishes and seven top-25 finishes through 10 tournaments with all 28 rounds counting toward team scoring.

A member of the 2011-12 BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll, Armstrong boasts a 3.891 cumulative GPA through four semesters as a mechanical engineering major in the College of Engineering, while making Dean’s List every semester.

Armstrong is the first Notre Dame women’s golfer to earn Capital One Academic All-America accolades.

About The Capital One Academic All-America Program

Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
