CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Seven Notre Dame women’s tennis players competed at the ITA Midwest Regional this past weekend at the University of Illinois. This event was a qualifying event for the ITA Super Regional Tournament that will be hosted in October at Ohio State. To qualify, individuals needed to advance to the Round of 16 in singles and the Quarterfinals in doubles.

In fact, two Fighting Irish student-athletes punched their ticket to Super Regionals, as Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman qualified in both singles and doubles. They will join fellow teammates Page Freeman and Julia Lilien, who already earned their spots at the event based on rankings.

When asked what she was focusing on for each match, Andreach said, “My biggest focus going into each match was to step into the court and hit more offensive balls, while keeping big target areas in mind. I also wanted to keep my composure no matter what the score was in each match.”

Other successes from the weekend were debut victories from our four freshmen; Carrie, Beckman, Katherine Bellia, Maria Olivia Castedo, and Nibedita Ghosh.  When asked, how did it feel to represent the Fighting Irish for the first time in competition, Beckman answered, “It felt so good to represent the Irish for the first time officially as it’s something I’ve been looking forward to since committing here.  It was a great feeling to be on the court playing for something bigger than myself.”  Sophomore, Yashna Yellayi, and Senior, Maeve Koscielski, also picked up wins over the weekend.
Andreach on her biggest takeaway from the tournament:
“My biggest takeaway from the weekend was the importance of controlling my emotions and keeping that composure that I was focused on. In my last match there were a few games where in the past I would let myself go, but staying disciplined with my emotions helped me be successful in the end.”

Beckman on her biggest takeaway from the tournament:
“My biggest takeaway from this weekend is that I’m ready to compete at this level but need to solidify my identity on the court and be confident in staying true to myself. It also showed areas for growth and areas where I’m going to be purposeful putting in the extra work.”
Coach Silverio’s reflection from the tournament:
“Great FIGHT from our seven players that competed at the ITA Regional…lessons learned, confidence gained, and more work to be done! Let’s keep getting after it.”
