Anders Lee Named CCHA Rookie Of The Week

Jan. 31, 2011

Notre Dame, Ind. – Freshman left wing Anders Lee (Edina, Minn.) has been named the CCHA rookie of the week for his play in Notre Dame’s back-to-back ties with Miami on Jan. 28-29. For Lee, this marks the second time this season that he has been named the conference’s rookie of the week. Twice this year, the 6-3, 218-pound forward has been selected as the conference rookie of the month (October and December).

In last weekend’s ties with Miami that saw each team win a shootout, Lee turned in a five-point series, scoring two goals and adding three assists while being +2 with four shots on goal.

The ties give Notre Dame a 16-9-5 overall record and a 13-6-3-2 mark in the CCHA, good for 44 points. That moves the Irish back into first place in the conference race, one point ahead of second-place Michigan with the Wolverines having two games in hand.

On Fri., Jan 28, in a the wild 5-5 tie that the RedHawks would pick up an extra point with a shootout win, Lee set up three Irish goals, including two in the final 7:13 as the Irish rallied from a 5-3 deficit. Lee’s first assist of the night set up T.J. Tynan’s (Fr., Orland Park, Ill.) first goal of the game at 4:57 of the second period that made it 2-2. With the Irish trailing 5-3 in the final eight minutes, the former Green Bay Gambler set up Riley Sheahan’s (So., St. Catharine’s, Ont.) power-play goal at 12:47 to make it a 5-4 game. He closed out his night by setting up Tynan’s second goal at 16:13 of the third for the 5-5 score. For his play, Lee was named the Perani Cup third star of the game.

Saturday night saw the team’s defenses take over in a 2-2 tie, but that didn’t stop Lee as he scored twice on rebounds for both Irish goals in the game. His first came at 11:08 of the first when his centering pass from the goal line to defenseman Kevin Lind (Fr., Homer Glen, Ill.) ended in a shot by Lind that rattled off the post. Lee jumped on the puck and backhanded it into the left side of the goal for his 17th of the season and a 1-0 Notre Dame lead.

With the score tied 1-1, Lee scored on the power play at 18:43 of the second when he jumped on the rebound of a shot by Sheahan to beat Miami’s Cody Reichard and give the Irish a 2-1 lead. The RedHawks would tie the game on a power-play goal in the third period. Lee was selected as the Perani Cup first star of the game for his play in Saturday’s game.

On the season, Lee now has 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points. He is tied for the team lead with five power-play goals, has one short-handed goal and leads the team with four game winners. He is second on the team in scoring and is second in the CCHA and the nation among freshmen in scoring, trailing only Tynan (18g, 21a). Lee is tied for sixth in the conference in overall scoring and his 18 goals tie him for second.

Lee also was named CCHA rookie of the week in October when he opened his season with a hat trick at the Warrior Ice Breaker Tournament versus Holy Cross and added and assist versus Boston University for a four-point weekend.

The Irish are off this weekend and return to action on Feb. 11-12 when they play host to the Bowling Green Falcons at the Joyce Center.
