NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Following another record-breaking performance in helping the Notre Dame volleyball team to a 2-0 start in BIG EAST play, sophomore Toni Alugbue has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first time this season, the league office announced on Monday.
Alugbue, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll the last three weeks, broke her career high for the third time this season in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Cincinnati on Friday night. The Del Aire, Calif., pounded out 26 kills with only three errors in 54 attempts as she hit .426 for the match. She also added 11 digs and seven blocks as the Irish rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five sets over the Bearcats.
In a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 10 Louisville on Sunday, Alugbue had a strong all-around match with 18 kills, 18 digs, two blocks, one assist and one service ace as the Irish snapped the Cardinals 10-match winning streak in earning their first win over a top-10 team since 2009.
For the year Alugbue is hitting .286, while averaging a team-high 4.02 kills per set. She is also third on the team in digs per set (2.42) fourth in blocks (33) and tied for third in service aces (6).
Notre Dame (9-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) returns home to Purcell Pavilion this weekend as it plays host to Marquette on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Syracuse on Sunday at 2 p.m.
