June 29, 2018

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame will be represented at the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, which will take place July 12-21 at Netanya in Netanya, Israel.

Alex Hurdle, a 2018 graduate, will compete for the Philippines at the World Championships while incoming freshman Jose Boyer will play for Puerto Rico. Hurdle and the Philippines are in the Grey Division with the Czech Republic and Belgium while Boyer’s Puerto Rico squad will compete in the Bronze Division with Wales and Bermuda.

A record 48 nations will participate in this year’s tournament over the 10 days of the event. The field is broken into 15 divisions, with the top six teams competing in the Blue Division. The other 14 divisions all have three teams and are not grouped by world ranking.

Canada resides in the Blue Division along with Australia, England, the Iroquois National Team, Scotland and the United States. The U.S. begins its tournament on Thursday, July 12 against the Iroquois National Team. The game will air live on ESPN2 at 1:30 p.m. ET.

The Blue Division has six days of pool play (July 12-17) and the top four teams from that division advance to the quarterfinal round. The top two seeds receive a bye into the semifinals. The other eight divisions have three pool-play games and will begin bracket play on July 14. The top team in each of the eight divisions after pool play will have the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket.

Hurdle and Boyer give the Irish five alums and/or current student athletes to  participate in the world championships, which take place every four years. Todd Rassas (`98) won a gold medal with the U.S. in 2002 and then was part of the squad that captured silver in 2006. D.J. Driscoll (`06) helped the U.S. reclaim gold in 2010. David Earl (`11) helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal in the 2014 World Championships.

The entire 2014 FIL World Championships will be broadcast on the digital networks of WatchESPN and the new subscription platform ESPN+. Click here for more information on the tournament.
