Albert, Gaetino, Named Hermann Trophy Semifinalists

1-of-2 schools to have 2 representatives

KANSAS CITY – United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced its 15 women’s seminfinalists for the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy, based on voting by NCAA Division I women’s soccer coaches. With that said, Notre Dame landed two representatives up for national player of the year – Korbin Albert (ACC Midfielder of the Year) and Eva Gaetino (ACC Defender of the Year).

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967.

Albert was an absolute highlight reel over the second half of the season, scoring 14 goals over the last 12 games. In fact, her 16 total goals on the season ranked top-10 in the country and tops for a midfielder. Furthermore, nine of her goals came against top-25 opposition.

And how about this stat – of her 13 non-PK goals, 10 have come from outside the box, with three coming via direct free-kick. Furthermore, of those 13, seven have been delivered by her left foot and six from her right.

Next, Albert totaled 37 points on the season, which ranked in the top-10 as well. In addition, she had six game-winning goals, which ranked top-5 in the country.

Then on the defensive side, there was Gaetino who spearheaded a backline who collected 14 shutouts on the year – their most since 2016. Notre Dame’s .609 shutout percentage ranked ninth in the nation, plus the defense helped post a 56-16 goal differential (11-2 in NCAA Tournament).

To further display the defense’s dominance, try this stat – they only allowed 3.0 shots on goal per game. In fact, there were seven games this season in which they allowed one SOG or fewer.

Gaetino’s ability on the ball was and her ability to connect with the midfield was also unmatched. Lastly, she also added a header goal to her season resume.

Three women’s finalists will be named for the award on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held in St. Louis on Jan. 6, 2023 to announce the winner.
