March 16, 2004

Providence, R.I. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse midfielder, Abby Owen (Sr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), has been selected the BIG EAST co-offensive player of the week for the week ending March 14. The senior played a major role in leading the Irish to a pair of wins versus second-ranked Duke and sixth-ranked James Madison to help Notre Dame to its best start ever at 5-0.

In the two wins, played at Disney’s World of Sports Complex over spring break, Owen scored five goals and assisted on two others to lead the Irish to a pair of two-goal victories versus two of the top teams in the nation.

In the 11-9 win over the Duke, Owen scored three goals and added a ground ball; a caused turnover and one draw control, to help the Irish to their first win in seven tries versus the Blue Devils.

In the come-from-behind 9-7 win over James Madison, Owen had her third four-point game of the season, collecting two goals and two assists with three ground balls and a career-high five caused turnovers. She assisted on Meredith Simon’s game-winning goal with 4:30 left in the contest. The Irish twice rallied from four-goal deficits (4-0 and 7-3) for the win.

On the season, Owen is tied for the team lead in goals with 15 and is second overall with 18 points. She has converted on three-of-six free-position shots and leads the team with 10 caused turnovers.

She also received honorable mention player of the week honors this week from Inside Lacrosse Magazine.

The Irish are off until Friday, March 26 when they return to home action with their BIG EAST opener at Moose Krause Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
