#7 Women's Tennis Falls to #9 Tennessee 6-1

The seventh-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team dropped a road match to ninth-ranked Tennessee 6-1 Sunday afternoon. The Irish fall to 15-4 on the season, while the Lady Volunteers improve to 15-2. The Irish won just one doubles match and Kimberly Guy was the lone singles winner. Prior to the loss, Notre Dame had won five straight matches and nine of its last ten. The Irish return to action on Friday, March 30, when they take on Iowa at the Eck Tennis Pavilion at 4:00 p.m.

The Vols took the doubles point as Brooke Cordell and Agnes Wiski beat Lindsey Green and Nina Vaughan at No. 3 doubles 8-3 and Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland downed Guy and Katie Cunha 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The Irish did get a victory from Michelle Dasso and Becky Varnum when they knocked off #45 Vilmarie Castellvi and Kim Gates 8-6 in the match at No. 1 doubles. Dasso and Varnum, the fifth-ranked doubles team in the nation, have now won eleven matches in a row.

Tennessee took a 2-0 lead when Castellvi beat Vaughan at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1. Gates then defeated Varnum 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The Volunteers clinched the match when 65th-ranked Ojeda upset third-ranked All-American Michelle Dasso 6-1, 6-0. With the match decided, Guy gained the lone Irish singles triumph with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cordell. Cleveland and Wiski also registered wins over Green and Caylan Leslie at No. 5 and 6 singles respectively.
