#5 Irish Take On #4 Boston College in NCAA Quarterfinals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. —After a pair of victories over Robert Morris and Virginia last weekend at Arlotta Stadium, the Irish have reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth time in program history (2002, 2006, 2009, 2016, 2021). The Irish are vying for their second appearance in the National Semifinals (2006) with a victory this Saturday at No. 4 Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts.

FOR STARTERS

  • The Irish have won two games in a single NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history (2006).
  • The Irish opened the NCAA Tournament with a 16-0 blanking of Robert Morris, which was the first-ever shutout in the history of the NCAA D1 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.
  • The Irish followed up that performance with a 13-8 triumph over Virginia in the second round, and were led offensive by Jackie Wolak with career-highs in points (6) and goals (4).
  • Wolak now leads the Irish in both points (48) and assists (19) this season.
  • With 10 saves last Sunday vs. Virginia, Bridget Deehan has reached the double-digit saves mark in eight games this season and is the ACC’s leader in saves per game at 9.24.
  • Samantha Lynch saw her first game action since April 10 last weekend and netted a goal in last Sunday’s win over Virginia.
  • Four Irish earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region honors this weekend, including three First-Teamers in Savannah Buchanan, Kasey Choma and Bridget Deehan along with Second Team honoree Madison Ahern.
  • Four different players have between 45 and 48 points in a balanced Irish offensive attack, including Jackie Wolak (48), Kasey Choma (47), Maddie Howe (45) and Madison Ahern (45).
  • Maddie Howe sits just three points shy of becoming the seventh player in program history to hit the 200 career points mark.

2021 NCAA TOURNAMENT

  • All eight national seeds earned a berth in the quarterfinals, including five ACC programs in #1 North Carolina, #3 Syracuse, #4 Boston College, #5 Notre Dame and #7 Duke.
  • The winner of the Notre Dame/Boston College matchup will take on the winner of the Stony Brook/North Carolina contest in the National Semifinals.
  • The Final Four is slated for May 28 & 30 and will be hosted by Towson University at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland.

THE NOTRE DAME-BC SERIES

  • The Irish and Eagles will be meeting for the 19th time this Saturday in Newton with Boston College holding a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Notre Dame will be looking to avenge a pair of road losses to Boston College last month in Chestnut Hill.
  • Saturday marks the first NCAA Tournament meeting between the two programs.
  • The two sides have only met in postseason play twice, both Boston College victories in back-to-back ACC Tournaments in 2017 and 2018.
