Irish In The NHL Update

South Bend, Ind. 一 Through the first few months of the 2021-22 NHL season, 13 former Notre Dame players have seen action for teams across the league. Cole’s first of the year: Ian Cole nets his first goal of the season and 28th of his career in a 6-2 win over Buffalo (Dec. 4).

Irish on Irish crime: Jake Evans uses nifty stickwork and goes shortside-high to tally a goal past former ND goaltender/teammate Cal Petersen. Petersen got the final say as the Kings beat the Canadiens in overtime, 3-2 (Nov. 9).

Multi-goal game for Vinnie: Vinnie Hinostroza recorded his fourth mulit-goal game of his career in his third multi-goal period in the first against Florida (Dec. 2).

Irish duo help find the net in season opener: Kyle Palmieri assisted on Anders Lee’s first goal of the year in the Islander’s season opener against Carolina (Oct. 14).

The Irish’s First for Seattle: Riley Sheahan found the net against the Devils to pick up the first goal by a former Notre Dame player for the Seattle Kraken (Oct. 19).

A first for Steeves: Alex Steeves made his NHL debut this season, and he tallied his first career point as an assist in a 5-4 win for the Maple Leafs over the Blackhawks (Dec. 11)

A new year hat trick for Rust: Bryan Rust led the way for the Penguins in their first game of the new year with two assists and his fifth NHL hat trick in a 8-5 win over the San Jose Sharks (Jan. 2).

Burke & Morris Ink NHL Deals

Former Fighting Irish All-American goaltender Cale Morris (Chicago) and former captain Cal Burke (Colorado) recently inked NHL deals and were recalled to their teams’ respective taxi squads.

Morris, who played from 2016-20 and led the Irish to the 2018 NCAA Championship game, signed a one-year entry-level deal on Dec. 31.

Burke, who also played from 2016-20 with the Irish, signed a one-year contract with Colorado on Dec. 16 and later was recalled to the taxi squad.
