CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Fighting Irish concluded their regular season road schedule with a tough loss to No. 11 North Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals met Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill for a top-25 showdown as No. 22 Notre Dame fell 5-0 to the 11th ranked Tarheels.
UNC jumped out in front with a sweep in doubles, taking courts one and three by a 6-0 score. Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells trailed 2-3 on the second court when their match was abandoned.
Cabrera notched a first set victory for the team as he beat Tarheels’ Brian Cernoch in the tiebreaker, 7-6(8). His second set was left unfinished while he looked to clinch the Irish point.
Two other sets were pushing the seventh game point as Grayson Broadus fell in a close 5-7 set on the fifth court and Howells held his opponent, Blaine Boyden, tied at five when the match was called.
Notre Dame will finish their regular season next weekend with a series of home matches, including a senior night to honor the four members of the Class of 2019.
Their first match is set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 as they face Georgia Tech. The team then welcomes Clemson and Nebraska-Omaha to town for a Sunday doubleheader with the first match scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. against the Tigers.
The Irish and Lancers then play at 4:30 p.m. in the final regular season match of 2019.
