OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The No. 17 University of Notre Dame women’s rowing team wrapped up its first regatta of the 2016 spring season by winning two races and claiming four runner-up finishes in six races Sunday at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational at Melton Lake Rowing Venue.

For the weekend the Irish claimed four wins and 10 runner-up finishes over 17 races while competing against three ranked squads in No. 4 Louisville, No. 11 Michigan and No. 20 Louisville.

Notre Dame picked up its two wins Sunday at 3rd varsity 8 and 3rd varsity 4 while competing against the Wolverines and Kansas.

The 3rd varsity 8 team composed of Lauren Matchett, Megan McKeon, Kate Trankina, Mairead Dunne, Katie Wiedenhoft, Niijor May, Stephanie Dubois, Lauren McKee and Erin Coscia (coxswain) beat Kansas head to head in 7:07.64.

In the 3rd varsity 4 race, Notre Dame again topped the Jayhawks, as the squad of Molly Pierce, Evelyn McManus, Kelly Fischer, Lauren Saunee and Samantha Hedrick (coxswain) finished in 7:49.89 to lower their time from Saturday’s morning session.

Notre Dame will train for two weeks before heading to the Longhorn Invitational in Town Lake, Texas March 25-26.

Russell Dorn, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2011 and coordinates all media efforts for the Notre Dame volleyball, rowing and baseball programs. A native of Greenwood, South Carolina, Dorn graduated from Furman University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in history before earning his master’s degree in sports communications from Georgia State University in 2011.
