#16 Irish Finish 16th At NCAA Championship

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — The University of Notre Dame rowing team completed its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship on Sunday, racing in final events for all three boats on Lake Natoma. The Irish varsity four earned 12th place after racing in its petite final, while the first and second varsity eight boats each finished in 17th place overall following C final heats at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

No. 16 Notre Dame held true to its national ranking with a team finish of 16th place after three days at the 2015 NCAA Division I Rowing Championship. The Irish earned 41 points in race scoring to narrowly finish behind No. 15 Southern California (45 points) for 15th place.

Notre Dame’s varsity four opened championship Sunday as one of six entries into the petite final heat, racing for places seven through 12 in the final NCAA standings. The Irish lineup of coxswain Jill Ryan, Bailey Amenabar, Elizabeth Walter, Madelynn Conlin and Treasa O’Tighearnaigh finished just over three seconds out of third place, taking sixth in the petite final with a time of 7:32.551. No. 9 Washington State took the heat win in 7:24.361, followed by No. 2 California (7:28.253) and No. 7 Stanford (7:29.455) rounding out the top three.

In the Division I C final for the second varsity eight, Notre Dame coxswain Alex Techar, Elizabeth Gilbert, Rose Doerfler, Ellen Gleadow, Catherine Wagner, Sarah Russel, Elizabeth Kelley, Gretchen Bruggeman and Madeline Loper outraced Massachusetts (7:02.760) to the line to finish in fifth place in the heat with a 7:02.703 readout. No. 10 Princeton (6:46.978) was the C final victor, followed by No. 13 Harvard in second place with a time of 6:48.978.

The Notre Dame first varsity eight closed the 2015 season for the Irish seeded sixth in the Division I eights C final. Coxswain Reilly Kearney, Carlee Beckler, Sarah Kappers, Katie Skorcz, Hilary Shinnick, Anna Kottkamp, Ailish Sheehan, Alexis Olson and Joanna Mulvey just missed a top four finish behind Southern California (6:44.218), settling for fifth place with a time of 6:44.901. No. 12 Wisconsin (6:36.006) won the heat in a tight race with No. 8 Yale (6:38.916), followed by No. 19 Gonzaga (6:41.158) in third place.

Ohio State secured its third straight NCAA team championship, winning the first varsity eight and claiming runner-up honors in the second varsity eight in scoring 126 points for the second consecutive season. California took second place in the overall standings with 114 points, while Brown used a second varsity eight victory to place third (112 points). Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion Virginia was the top finisher in the varsity four to take fifth place overall with 104 points.
